Video formats explained

• MP4 is the safe default: H.264 video in a container that phones, browsers, TVs, and social platforms all accept. If something refuses to play, this is usually what to convert it to.
• MOV is Apple's container, and what an iPhone or QuickTime records. Quality is excellent, files are large, and support outside Apple hardware is patchy.
• MKV is a container built for keeping everything in one file: several audio tracks, switchable subtitles, and chapters. Plex, Kodi, and VLC love it; many phones and smart TVs will not open it.
• WebM is made for the web. Files are small and stream quickly in every modern browser, but most desktop editors and phone galleries will not import them.
• AVI is a Windows container from the 1990s. Old clips still play, but the files are large and mobile support is thin, which is why most AVI footage ends up as MP4.

Audio formats explained

• MP3 is the universal lossy format. Small files that play on effectively any device, which makes it the right choice for sharing, podcasts, and long recordings.
• WAV is uncompressed PCM audio: full fidelity, very large files, and the format most editing and mastering software prefers to work with.
• M4A holds AAC audio in an MP4 container. It is Apple's default for voice memos and music, and sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, but travels less easily outside Apple's ecosystem.
• OGG carries Vorbis audio in an open, royalty-free container. Common in games, Linux tooling, and open-source projects that avoid patented formats.
• FLAC is lossless compression: bit-perfect audio at around half the size of WAV, which suits archiving and high-quality music libraries.
